Oranges and lemons

Oh no. Sorry to hear that.sephi wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 12:02 pm Oranges: I have a garden now
Lemons: Got made redundant - 42 days left
Have you got any plans or ideas?
Re: Oranges and lemons
Doing the garden mostly
I'm applying for roles as you do - currently at well over 100 applications. Feels like I'm back at the start of my career with no experience, generic "no" responses to jobs that I think my skillset & experience are a great match for.
I am getting traction now though, once I get through to a human things seem to go better.
2 interviews ended with no offer but both gave great feedback
I have 3 interviews lined up and another to be scheduled.
Hopefully one or more of them like me enough to offer me something,
Re: Oranges and lemons
That all sounds really promising. I agree that meeting a human face to face is half the battle won.sephi wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 1:38 pmDoing the garden mostly![]()

What kind of work do you do?

I design and run the cloud platforms that companies’ software runs on. I make sure they’re available, secure, and can cope when thousands or even millions of people use them.Lorraine wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 7:11 pmThat all sounds really promising. This meant in the most complimentary way possible

Wishing you luck finding something, hope you got a good redundancy package.
I am finding that the job market (overall, and in my field(s) ) is dire at the moment. I decided to stay where I am, have stopped looking.
I earn a lot below my potential but, I get to do very little and be at home all day. Most jobs I thought looked promising required at least 3-4 days in the office and the commute and dog care costs would just eat up the extra I'd earn anyway. I had a word with myself and thought, well what's the point in stressing myself out and going back to sitting in traffic for hours on end when I have so much freedom? Money isn't everything. And I will be earning more in the latter months of the year when business starts up again.
My current job is boring, but I get to concentrate on my other vocations as well and it doesn't take up a lot of my energy. I am seeing the value in that now

Oranges: Life generally feels to be picking up. My house (I moved in January) is feeling like home. This will probably be where I die I mean my 'forever home'.
Lemons: My garden is the bane of it. Nothing is growing fast enough and Luna keeps digging at the area where I am trying to cultivate a lawn

Re: Oranges and lemons
Oranges: Career going very well, having fun with friends and family, I actually feel in control of my life for once.
Lemons: So busy. I feel like I'm constantly triple booked. The job that takes up most of my time is also the worst paid, and I'm in a situation where the only way to do even half way to a good job is loads of unpaid overtime, but it is an elected role so I feel too guilty if I put my foot down and work to rule. Ffs.

Re: Oranges and lemons
Oranges: I've applied for a job, I know I said I wasn't looking any longer but this one is just similar to what I do now, WFH, slightly fewer hours, more money.
Lemons: My Mum will probably disown it if I get it (an organisation whose principles she fundamentally disagrees with, I will say with good reason)!

Re: Oranges and lemons
Oranges: after 3 months, 250 job applications, 50 interviews I finally have a job offer!
Lemons: I have to move to London to take it.

I think 'Congratulations' is the most appropriate reply here.sephi wrote: Wed Aug 26, 2026 5:05 pm Oranges: after 3 months, 250 job applications, 50 interviews I finally have a job offer!

Congratulations!
London is a huge change but an exciting one.
Oranges: I am getting somewhere with my garden project
Lemons: I am not sure I have a spine left.
